Assistant Professor in Urban Studies
Cleveland State University Department of Urban Studies
The Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University seeks applications for a tenure track faculty member in urban studies at the assistant level. The positions will start in August 2010. The newly hired faculty member must be able to contribute to our national ranking in urban policy/city management and be able to support the university's mission in engaged learning and its cross-campus initiatives in health and sustainable communities.
We are a large multidisciplinary faculty, offering twelve degree programs at the doctoral, masters and undergraduate levels. We have three joint masters degrees with the Cleveland Marshall College of Law. Our degree programs emphasize critical thinking and development of core competencies in relevant knowledge and practice. Our distinguished faculty members are leaders in their respective fields. The faculty is commited to engaged learning that offers students opportunities to interact with organizations and communities in the Greater Cleveland area. The College also is home to several applied research centers in the areas of economic development, community planning and development, leadership development, nonprofit management, environmental finance, and public management. The new faculty member will have the opportunity to collaborate with other faculty and the research centers to enhance externally-funded research awards. The faculty member will teach in both graduate and undergraduate programs as needed.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in urban studies, history, sociology, geography, public administration, planning, urban/public policy, economics, political science or a related field; ABD candidates must complete all requirements for the Ph.D. by July 1, 2010. Potential for engaged scholarship and thought leadership that will contribute to the areas of urban policy and public management.
Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with interactive e-learning environments. A demonstrated research interest in one or more of the following areas: urban history, urban geography, African American/Black studies, ethnic/gender studies, urban planning, urban sociology, public administration, urban diversity, negotiation and conflict resolution, nonprofit management, environmental studies, and urban policy generally.

The statement should also include information on which courses currently offered at the Levin College he or she is qualified to teach and describe a new course that could be brought to the college.
