Auburn University is geographically located in a moderate climate with easy access to both beach and mountain recreational facilities along the rapidly developing I-85 corridor between Atlanta, Georgia and Montgomery, Alabama.
The chosen candidate will serve as the chief officer for the Office of International Education. The major areas reporting directly to the Assistant Provost are Study Abroad, International Student and Scholar Services, and Intensive English Program. The Assistant Provost will also be instrumental in coordinating the international activities of both the Research and Outreach functions that report to the Provost to cross functionally maximize the benefits of each.
The Assistant Provost for International Programs is in charge of the continued internationalization of Auburn as part of the university’s mission and strategic initiatives. Campus and curriculum internationalization has recently been recognized as an essential and increasingly important component of Auburn University’s academic program. The American Council on Education defines this as “the process of integrating an international, intercultural, or global dimension into the purpose, functions, or delivery of post-secondary education.”
Primary responsibilities include working with faculty and students in the internationalization of Auburn’s academic program; promotion and administration of academic partnerships with foreign institutions for the purposes of research, teaching, outreach, service, or other academic functions; promoting and developing study abroad and student/scholar exchange; monitoring and reporting internationalization activities for the three land grant missions; increasing support for international education, international research and international outreach; coordination between the various offices dealing with international programs; coordination between the Intensive English Program and the undergraduate and graduate admissions process; and overseeing the development of appropriate and official relations with the Department of Homeland Security, Department of Labor, and Department of State.
Qualifications for the position include experience in university international leadership and administration and having created and implemented such a vision for continuing the internationalization in an accredited university.
This position is a full-time, 12-month tenure-track appointment in the appropriate academic department. The Assistant Provost for International Programs will report directly to the Office of the Provost.
The position requires an earned doctorate or equivalent and a distinguished scholarship record sufficient to merit appointment with tenure at the rank of Associate/Full Professor; cultural sensitivity and the ability to work effectively in a cross-cultural setting; and fluency in English and one additional major language.
The successful candidate should be familiar with Federal export control regulations and the implications associated with foreign nationals visiting or working on campus as well as the associated immigration regulatory compliance.
The candidate will be expected to develop relationships with State of Alabama, international organizations, and Federal agencies that sponsor international programs, including Fulbright. The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment; excellent communication skills required.
Salary and benefits will be commensurate with education and experience.
