Auburn University is seeking a Dean of the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) to provide vision and leadership that enhances the College’s tradition of excellence in teaching, research, service, outreach and diversity. The successful candidate will serve as the chief academic and administrative officer for the College of Sciences and Mathematics and will report directly to the Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs.
COSAM consists of the Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Geology and Geography, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics. The College has 151 tenured and tenure-track faculty members, 323 graduate students, and 2,864 undergraduate students. This person is also one of four Associate Directors of the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station.
Auburn University is one of the nation’s premier land, sea, and space grant institutions. In the 2010 edition of U.S. News and World Report, it was ranked 39th among public universities. Auburn is an institution that is both highly research-active and committed to maintaining teaching excellence offering Bachelor’s, First Professional, Master’s, Educational Specialist, and Doctor’s degrees. Its enrollment of 24,602 students includes 19,926 undergraduates, 3,689 graduate students, and 987 first professional students. There are 1,176 instructional faculty members distributed across nine Colleges and four Schools, with degrees offered in more than 200 academic programs.
The city of Auburn is a thriving intellectual community located approximately 100 miles southwest of Atlanta, GA and southeast of Birmingham, AL, and is about 60 miles from the state capitol (Montgomery).
The responsibilities of this position include participating in the leadership of the University as a member of the administration; providing visionary leadership and supervision of the College’s strategic planning and budget development; overseeing teaching, research, outreach and administration within the College; overseeing faculty recruitment and development including promotion and tenure; providing leadership in fund raising and enhanced extramural support of research; coordinating searches for and recommending appointments of departmental chairpersons and research directors; representing the College’s interests to various constituencies within the AU community; seeking funds from the University and external sources for the College’s teaching, research, outreach and service missions.
The position requires an earned doctorate or equivalent and a distinguished scholarship record sufficient to merit appointment with tenure at the rank of full professor. The successful candidate should have an outstanding record of achievement in research and teaching and demonstrable administrative skills and experience. Effective communication with multiple constituencies, a talent for management of complex organizations and the capacity for visionary leadership are especially important.
