Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Director serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the School (duties comparable to those of a Dean) and reports to the Chancellor.

The School has 78 full-time faculty members and offers eight Bachelor of Arts degree programs (Communication, English, General Arts and Sciences, History, Political Science, Arts Administration, Digital Media, Arts, and Technology, and Psychology), a Bachelor of Science degree program (Psychology), a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program (Creative Writing), and a Master of Arts program (Applied Clinical Psychology).

The School also offers courses in anthropology, art, art history, foreign languages, music, womens' studies, philosophy, religious studies, sociology, and theater. Through the teaching of Gen Ed courses, of which a majority are housed in the School, H & SS faculty teach virtually every student at Penn State Behrend.

The School has an enrollment of over 500 students at the undergraduate and graduate level, as well as a vibrant alumni community of over 3,300. Penn State Behrend ( is a highly respected, comprehensive four-year and graduate College of Penn State. Students, faculty, and staff enjoy a vibrant campus community and the extraordinary beauty of the College's 854-acre setting in the suburbs of Erie, Pennsylvania. The institution's 5,000 students can choose from 37 baccalaureate majors and 23 minors, four associate degree programs, and five masters programs including Accounting, Applied Clinical Psychology, Business Administration, Manufacturing Management, and Project Management.

The College is organized into four schools: Business; Engineering; Humanities and Social Sciences; and Science. There are 283 full-time and 75 part-time faculty. Currently, there are more than 50 buildings on campus, including residential housing for 1,750 students. Our students hail from 36 states, districts, and territories, and 44 countries. We have more than 100 student clubs/organizations as well as award-winning speaker and chamber music series that enrich campus life.

A strong NCAA Division III athletics program features 22 varsity teams. Erie is a metropolitan area of 280,000, and is located on Lake Erie's beautiful Presque Isle Bay. The region has a favorable cost of living, offers a wide variety of cultural and recreational resources, has a strong manufacturing base, and is in close proximity to metropolitan areas of Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Buffalo.

Job Requirements

Candidates should have a teaching and research record with credentials commensurate for appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure in one of the School's academic disciplines.

The ideal candidate should have at least three years of administrative experience, including a record of progressively increasing responsibilities.
