Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC), a nationally recognized leader in urban-serving education, is one of 23 colleges within The City University of New York (CUNY) system. The school also enrolls more international students than any other community college in the Northeast.† BMCC is currently seeking an experienced art gallery professional to manage and direct the daily operations of the Shirley Fiterman Art Center. The Director of the Art Center is the senior manager of the Center and reports directly to the President of the college.

The Shirley Fiterman Art Center is located in the South lobby of the Myles and Shirley Fiterman Hall Building - a building gifted to BMCC in 1993 by the Fiterman family and rebuilt with an expanded focus in 2012. The Art Center, in partnership with the BMCC Foundation Board, a not-for-profit organization, is dedicated to raising funds for student scholarships, and ensuring the success of its students, who come from every borough of New York, and countries around the world, seeking better lives. The Director reports to the President and acts as the Chief Administrator of the Shirley Fiterman Art Center (SFAC) at Borough of Manhattan Community College. The Art Center supports the educational mission of the College and serves as a cultural resource for the College community and for the public at large. The Center is located in the Miles and Shirley Fiterman Hall building at 81 Barclay Street.

Duties included but not limited to:

  • Directs the administrative functions of the Center, including budget, archives, inventory, acquisitions, security and facilities;
  • Presents reports on all operations consistent with the best practices in the not-for-profit/public sectors;
  • Manages the permanent art collection of the College (arrangement, preservation, documentation, display of art works;
  • Integrates the Art Center into the life of the College (including the curricula of the Departments of Music and Art) and the surrounding community;
  • Develops the Centerís financial base through fundraising, grants, events, artwork sales, etc.;
  • Oversees the development, design and implementation of inspired art exhibitions, programs, related publications, and website design to attract both sponsors and audiences;
  • Devises and maintains a marketing plan that raises awareness of the Art Center and increases traffic to SFAC website and Facebook page;
  • Assists in acquiring works of art for the collegeís permanent collection, or sale;
  • Plans and implements effective programs for all BMCC constituents;
  • Plans and coordinates publicity;
  • Hires, trains, and supervises staff and volunteers; and
  • Performs other related duties as directed by the President.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

  • Oversees an Art Center or Museum, promoting and directing programs and initiatives.
  • Works with senior management to create a vision and strategy for art/museum collection which fulfills the mission of the College
  • Develops, researches, curates and markets high quality exhibits; designs educational programs around exhibits such as lectures, films, learning aids and internships which relate to the College's curricula
  • Oversees the development and implementation of creative programming to attract both sponsors and audiences
  • Directs the administrative functions of the Center/Museum, including budget, archives, inventory, acquisitions, security and facilities; Presents reports on all operations consistent with best practices in the not-for-profit/public sectors
  • Establishes and cultivates community and cultural relationships and partnerships; participates in funding initiatives
  • Develops relationships between the Center/Museum and College academic and administrative departments
  • Hires, and manages Center/Museum staff
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience required.
  • Masterís degree in art history, museum studies, or an equivalent degree preferred;
  • Experience in a senior level management role within a gallery, museum or similar non-profit institution;
  • Experience working with senior management to create a vision and strategy for the collegeís art collection which fulfills the mission of the College;
  • Demonstrated record of success with development and fundraising;
  • Proven ability to merchandize art in a gallery setting and to oversee and maintain a web sells platform;
  • Proven ability to create and develop innovative exhibition and education programs;
  • Excellent communication, planning, and organizational skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work with the staff, faculty, administrators, students; and
  • A strong interest in arts education.
