The Department of Educational Psychology (http://ed-psych.utah.edu) in the College of Education at the University of Utah, in collaboration with the College of Science, invites applications for a tenure-track position in Mathematics Teacher Education within the Learning Sciences program. The Learning Sciences program works closely with the College’s Urban Institute for Teacher Education and the University’s Center for Science and Math Education to offer undergraduate and graduate instruction in the areas of learning, cognition, research, and math and science pedagogy. The College is deeply committed to: fostering collaboration across campus and across the state's school districts and policy networks; preparing K-12 teachers and educational professionals who are successful in diverse educational contexts; and supporting distinction research and scholarship.
Start Date: 16 August 2018
In addition to service at the program, college, and university levels, responsibilities will include: (1) development and maintenance of scholarly research related to mathematics teacher education; (2) develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Mathematics Pedagogy and Learning Sciences; (3) advise and supervise graduate student theses and doctoral dissertations; (4) develop research funding proposals to appropriate national agencies and foundations. In addition, successful applicants will (5) collaborate with faculty in the College of Education and the College of Science, the Department of Mathematics, and the Center for Science and Mathematics Education to enhance existing K-12 teacher education and development efforts.
The Learning Sciences program offers Ph.D., M.S., Masters of Statistics, and M.Ed. (in Instructional Design and Educational Technology) degrees through the department of Educational Psychology, University of Utah. The Learning Sciences program works closely with the College’s Urban Institute for Teacher Education and the University’s Center for Science and Math Education to offer undergraduate and graduate instruction in the areas of learning, cognition, research, and math and science methods. The department also includes APA approved doctoral programs in Counseling Psychology and School Psychology, as well as masters programs in Counseling, and doctoral and masters programs in Reading and Literacy.

This position requires an earned doctorate in Mathematics Teacher Education, Education, Educational Psychology, Learning Sciences, Cognitive Psychology, Cognitive Science, Psychology or a related field.
Candidates should have at least two years experience teaching in K-12 (K-6 preferred) school settings including settings and experience with diverse learners. Candidates should be able to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics education methods. In addition, candidates should have a strong program of theory-driven research in mathematics teacher education.
Possible research areas of interest include: pre-service teacher preparation and teacher professional development in mathematics; mathematical knowledge and conceptual understanding for teaching in K-12 settings; or development of mathematical reasoning and knowledge for elementary or secondary school learners. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong commitment to research that is grounded in psychological theories of learning and cognition.
