Job Description

Chair - Department of Humanities
Pennsylvania State University

The Department of Humanities is the oldest Department of Humanities in a College of Medicine in the country. With 12 core, 24 joint faculty, and housing the Kienle Center for Humanistic Care, the department has flourished in recent years.

Reporting to the Dean of the College of Medicine, Craig Hillemeier, M.D., the Chair is responsible for the strategic direction, fiscal management, and day to day management of faculty and 3 support staff.

Notably, the department manages an extensive curriculum with more required medical school courses than any humanities department in the country. Medical Students at PSU take courses with Humanities faculty all four years. Faculty have expertise in anthropology, English, bioethics, psychology, counseling, child protection, end of life care, comics and medicine, diversity in medicine, photography, arts and medicine, institutional betrayal, relational aggression and many other areas. In addition to training medical students and some residents, the department also trains PA students and graduate students. Four of the core faculty are physicians, four are bioethicists.

Other relevant data includes:

  1. One of four pillars in medical education at Penn State is the humanistic care of patients
  2. The department houses the Doctors Kienle Center for Humanistic Medicine, an endowed center that provides extensive arts-based outreach to the institution and community.
  3. Department has a robust research portfolio including two R01`s from the NIH and multiple smaller grants from foundations.
  4. The department has expertise in criticism and analysis but also places a high emphasis on creation and creativity.
  5. In the past few years, department members have published in top medical journals including the NEJM, JAMA, the American Journal of Public Health, PNAS, Health Affairs and many others. In addition, they routinely publish books and in the lay press.
  6. The department members are course directors in 5 required courses in the first phase of the medical curriculum as well leading courses in all four years. The department courses have been some of the highest rated in the curriculum for over a decade and are a routine draw to medical school applicants.
  7. The department directs the hospital ethics committee and a robust ethics consultation service
  8. The department houses and supports a number of extracurricular efforts including a popular literary magazine, a film club, a food as medicine program, a community garden, a farmer`s market, and new efforts are started routinely in partnership with trainees.

Institutionally, the department is considered a "Basic" or "Discovery" science department, and does not, at the current time, have independent graduate students.
