Faculty Positions in Computer Science
University of Texas at San Antonio

The Department of Computer Science at The University of Texas at San Antonio invites applications for multiple full-time, non-tenure track faculty positions, starting in Fall 2018. Interested candidates whose teaching interests are aligned with one or more of the following topics clusters are encouraged to apply. Depending on the qualifications and experience, the successful candidates may be considered at the level of Lecturer III, Senior Lecturer, Assistant or Associate Professor in Practice.

  • Topics Cluster 1: C programming and data structures (stacks, linked lists, queues, binary trees, graphs, associative arrays), and related courses
  • Topics Cluster 2: Java Programming, object-oriented programming, UML, GUI development, software life cycle and tools (Eclipse, Git, JavaFx), and related courses
  • Topics Cluster 3: Programming Languages and Concepts (C, Java, LISP, Python, C++, storage management, data representation, bindings, data control, operations, sequence control, language syntax), and related courses
  • Topics Cluster 4: Systems Programming (shell programming, Linux utilities, bash, sed, awk, regular expressions, low-level C programming, Python, file I/O, process control, interprocess communication), and related courses

Job Requirements

Required qualifications: Applicants for a Lecturer III position must have a Ph.D degree in Computer Science or related field or masterís degree with at least five years of teaching experience and demonstrated high levels of performance. This is a full-time appointment, and the initial appointment is for one to two years.

Applicants for a Senior Lecturer position must have a Ph.D degree in Computer Science or related field, teaching experience and qualifications comparable to those of faculty members in tenured positions, and demonstrated high levels of performance. This is a full-time appointment, and the initial appointment is for three years.

Applicants for an Assistant Professor in Practice position must have a Ph.D. degree and demonstrated excellence in teaching or professional experience in Computer Science or related field, as well as the potential for future professional achievement and/or community engagement/service. This is a full-time appointment, and the initial appointment is for one or two years.

Applicants for an Associate Professor in Practice position must have a Ph.D. degree and demonstrated excellence in teaching or professional experience in Computer Science or related field and has shown growth of reputation and maturation of teaching comparable to those of faculty members in tenured positions. Applicants to this position must have demonstrated recognition of teaching or expertise in Computer Science through professional contributions and evidence of outstanding success of engagement, service, or research component. This is a full-time appointment, and the initial appointment is for one to three years.

Responsibilities include teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and program development. An Assistant or Associate Professor in Practice are also required to establish an active research program in Computer Science or Computer Science education. Salary and start-up supporting packages for the positions are highly competitive. The initial appointments are for 1 to 3 years. The appointments may be renewed based on performance and departmentís needs.

  4. a statement of research interests (optional for Lecturer III and Senior Lecturer positions)
  5. a statement of teaching interests, expertise and pedagogy, and
  6. names, addresses (postal and e-mail), and telephone numbers of at least three references

Screening of applications will begin immediately. Full consideration will be given to applications received by May 21, 2018, and the search will continue until the positions are filled or the search is closed.

About the Department and the University The Department of Computer Science currently has 23 tenured/tenure-track faculty members and offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees supporting a dynamic and growing program with over 1,200 undergraduates and 140 graduate students, including 60 Ph.D. students. The major research units in the department include: the Institute for Cyber Security, which operates the FlexCloud and FlexFarm laboratories dedicated to cyber security research, and the Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security (CIAS), which focuses on cyber security maturity of cities and communities and also conducts nation-wide Cyber Security Defense Competitions for college and high school students. The faculty research activities and experimental facilities have been well supported by several federal research and infrastructure grants. CIAS received a large 5-year grant from the Department of Homeland Security to set up a national standards organization for information sharing and analysis. UTSA undergraduate cyber security programs are collectively ranked #1 in a 2014 survey; the graduate programs are ranked #2 in a 2016 listing.
