Academic Advisor, Student Success Center (2 Open Positions)
D'Youville College

General Statement of Duties:

The Academic Advisor position is a member of the professional undergraduate academic advising team and reports to the Office of Advising and Academic Planning. This position provides general academic advising, pre-registration, and progress toward degree advising. Those in this position will work with a wide variety of populations including at-risk, probationary, prospective first-year, athletes, veteran and international students; as well as close coordination with faculty, administration, and offices around campus.

Examples of Duties: (illustrative only)

  • Serve as a primary advisor for first-time-in-college (FTIC) students, from entry into the college through graduation; serve as a one-stop shop to ensure all students’ needs, questions, and concerns are addressed and answered at each meeting;
  • Provide academic planning in one-on-one advisement sessions. Create all first year student schedules; guide students in creating their schedules for each semester thereafter;
  • Educate students on a wide variety of topics including: majors and minors, dual majors, studying abroad, degree process, fulfilling requirements, etc.;
  • Teach students the skills to self-navigate to degree completion utilizing campus information, student on-line system, and campus resources; assist in the acquisition, usage and evaluation of information including college and department guidelines, catalogs, and on-line resources;
  • Use case management principles of advocacy, assessment, and service facilitation to advance the achievement of student goals and link students with appropriate resources throughout the educational continuum and beyond;
  • In collaboration with student, identify the appropriate educational and career options, and assist with the analysis of each option; establish academic and career goals and outline actions for student success;
  • Actively promote, contribute, and demonstrate a high level of commitment to working effectively with students, faculty, and staff of diverse backgrounds;
  • Interpret admissions assessment scores and advise students of appropriate placement and coursework;
  • Utilize available and appropriate technology to maintain up-to-date and accurate student records ensuring requirements are met for all undergraduate students via degree audits; identify current and potential academic needs, document on-going case management activities, and document all pertinent student information and status update;
  • Identify, reach out, and refer at-risk students and provide support, guidance and referral to academic departments, faculty, support services (Learning Center), crisis intervention (Personal Counseling), financial aid, residence life, and other college resources;
  • Monitor and advise students to ensure satisfactory grades and GPA requirements are met for the major;
  • Maintain close coordination and collaboration with individual departments/schools; keep up-to-date records and provide reports as necessary to individual departments/schools;
  • Participate fully in the college community: provide consultation, training, and outreach to students, faculty, staff and administrators;
  • Stay abreast of changing institutional information including new programs, course changes, important dates, costs, and updates in college-wide initiatives and polices.
  • Engage in professional development activities organizations; participate in college provided training sessions and workshops, and attend conferences as appropriate to job responsibilities.

Job Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with Undergraduate Admissions to ensure seamless access and transition experience for incoming freshman students.
  • Proven cross-cultural and interpersonal skills; including the ability to represent the college in a positive way to diverse populations.
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of student support services to accomplish student success goals.
  • A strong commitment to the college’s mission to honor the catholic heritage and the spirit of St. Marguerite D’Youville by fostering an environment that promotes academic, social, spiritual, and professional development in programs that promote leadership and service.

Committee Service
Serves on college, regional, and national committees as appropriate.
Maintains professional memberships in appropriate organizations such as the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) and other related groups

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • At least two years’ experience involving extensive student contact in a student services role at a two- or four-year institution.
  • Skilled at connecting and building rapport with students
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience developing and facilitating academic skill building workshops
  • Ability to successfully resolve student issues from request through resolution
    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree
  • Familiar with Higher Education and Learning Management Systems
