Medgar Evers College (MEC), a nationally recognized leader in urban serving education, is one of twenty three colleges within the dynamic City University New York (CUNY) System. Named for the late civil rights leader, Medgar Wiley Evers (1925-1963), the College's mission is to develop and maintain high quality, professional, career oriented undergraduate degree programs in the context of liberal education. Located in Central Brooklyn, MEC was established in 1970 with a mandate to meet the educational and social needs of the Central Brooklyn community, currently enrolling 7,000 students in degree programs. Students represent 105 countries around the world! MEC students obtain Associate degrees in eight fields, and Baccalaureate degrees in 18 fields. The College is committed to a student centered education and advancing knowledge through scholarly research.

The Department of English at Medgar Evers College invites applicants for a Faculty position in English at either the Instructor or Assistant Professor rank who have expertise in Composition and Rhetoric.

Composition is a college program housed in the English department. Primary responsibilities include teaching courses related to composition, designing curriculum and program development related to the composition courses, advising and mentoring students, and serving on college and university committees. The candidate is also responsible for scholarship, research and guidance duties in area(s) of expertise and will share responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions.

We seek a candidate who has a commitment to developing a strong composition program. The successful candidate will have expertise in teaching composition and evidence of ongoing program, creative and/or scholarly activity related to composition. Candidates must have a commitment to the educational mission of Medgar Evers College. Additional years of full or part time teaching experience in a college; coursework, training, and/or experience in composition; and demonstrated success in teaching and working with students from diverse backgrounds will be an advantage.

Job Requirements

For Assistant Professor:
Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

For Instructor:

Master's degree in area(s) of expertise, and/or active progress toward a Doctorate, or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, interest in productive scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

Preferred Qualifications:

For Instructor and Assistant Professor:
The candidate should have a minimum of two years of composition teaching experience.
