Frostburg State University invites applications for the position of Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to advance the mission and success of the College and to partner with a committed senior leadership team. The preferred start date is January 2019 but is negotiable. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience; University System of Maryland benefits package included.
A member institution of the University System of Maryland, Frostburg State University (FSU) is a public, comprehensive, largely residential regional university offering programs in the sciences, education, business, the arts and humanities at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. FSU’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) includes approximately 150 faculty and 3000 students in 18 academic departments (67% of FSU’s majors and faculty). The mission of CLAS is to provide students with a rigorous liberal arts and sciences curriculum grounded in a flexible, broad-based general education program and enriched by the availability of challenging academic majors and minors, graduate programs, interdisciplinary offerings, and other newly evolving programs that are responsive to emerging societal needs. FSU is located on a scenic 260-acre campus in the Appalachian Highlands of Western Maryland, a region rich in history and outdoor recreational activities just two hours southeast from Pittsburgh and two hours west of the Washington, DC and Baltimore metro areas.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the Provost, serve as the chief academic and administrative officer for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The Dean provides oversight of and strategic leadership for the quality of undergraduate and graduate programs; student recruitment and retention; efficient use of resources, economic development and cultural outreach, effective use of technology; curricular and programmatic assessment, redesign, and innovation; P-12 outreach; space planning; professional development of the faculty; and assisting with fundraising for CLAS. Working with University administration and the CLAS academic departments, the Dean discusses issues and makes decisions regarding faculty and staff, students, academic programs, and accreditation. Minimum Qualifications: Earned doctorate from a regionally accredited college or university in a discipline represented within CLAS. At least four years of experience at the department chair level or above. Knowledge of performance-based budgeting. A record of scholarship and/or creative activity. Fierce commitment to resolving issues of inclusion and diversity. Ability to think with interdisciplinarity. Demonstrated experience or clear potential for leadership in academic collaborations and collegial shared governance. Excellent team skills in diverse environments. Ability to work in a fast-paced and often-changing environment. Strong organizational, writing, and presentation skills. Experience with data-guided decision-making.
Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated excellence in strategic vision and action. Expertise in program planning and execution in a variety of formats. Experience with academic budgeting models, including performance-based. Deep knowledge of contemporary issues in higher education. The successful candidate will be innovative and forward-looking with strong interests in collaboration across the University and the University System of Maryland and a dedication to student recruitment, retention, success, and graduation.
