The Department of Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies (TECS) in the College of Education at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst is seeking candidates to join a dedicated and accomplished community of faculty, students, and staff as an Assistant or Associate Professor of Science Education. This is a full-time, tenure track position with a preferred start date of September 1, 2019.

The College offers programs of study leading to baccalaureate, graduate certificate, Master's, and Doctoral degrees. Founded on a social justice mission, the College is committed to forward-thinking research and improving education in support of a socially just world. As a part of the Mathematics, Science, and Learning Technologies (MSLT) concentration within the TECS department, the person hired will conduct research, engage in service, and have a philosophy of teaching and advising that reflects a commitment to social justice, improving learning and instruction, and challenging inequities in science education.


Responsibilities include continuing or developing a research agenda on the learning and teaching of science, with a strong preference for research interests involving technology. The person hired for this position will work closely with doctoral students to advise them and engage them in the research process. They will also participate in the training and education of K-12 pre-service and in-service science teachers with content areas and competencies related to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and Massachusetts Science, Technology, and Engineering Standards, including the emphasis in both on the engineering design process. Teaching will include opportunities in the Science Education Online program for in-service teachers. Applicants for the position at the associate level should have an established record of external funding and those at the assistant level the potential to do so. We are seeking a colleague who will be interested in collaborating with MSLT faculty to discuss program initiatives including expanding interdisciplinary STEM connections and developing courses for undergraduate students as part of the education minor and major programs. The successful candidate will also be interested in research collaborations with faculty across the College and University as well as schools in need of improvement. The candidate will also provide service within the Department, College, University, Commonwealth, and professional organizations.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in education or a related discipline by the time of the appointment
  • Established publication record or indication of considerable promise
  • Experience teaching or strong potential to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • A degree or equivalent experience in a science discipline
  • A proven track record in teaching science in a K-12 setting
  • The ability to work effectively with learners of diverse cultures and backgrounds
  • A commitment to social justice in education

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience advising students
  • Experience in research and/or teaching that integrates science with other STEM disciplines
  • Experience or potential for securing external funding.
