Chair, Department of Dance
The College at Brockport

The Chair of the Department of Dance provides leadership in all departmental matters including: hiring, supervision, mentorship and professional development of faculty and staff, student recruitment and retention, curriculum development and scheduling, budgeting, and coordination of production schedule, workshops and residencies.

The chair is also expected to serve as spokesperson for the department to the School of Arts and Sciences, teach courses in his/her area of specialization, produce scholarly or creative research at the national/international level, and participate in service to the department, school, college, and the field of dance.

Position available August 2019.

Department Description

Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance, the Department of Dance offers MFA, MA, BFA, BA, BS and Dance Minor degrees, all with a modern dance emphasis. There are approximately 15 graduate students and 100 undergraduate majors; the department maintains an active performance schedule, invites regular guest artist residencies, and hosts summer workshops. Faculty and staff are active professionals recognized at the national and international level for their research and teaching.

The Department of Dance is a program of distinction within the School of Arts and Sciences.

Facilities include five large fully equipped studios, a faculty warm-up space, a 250-seat proscenium theater, a large studio theatre, fully equipped conditioning room, costume and scenic shops, and video and audio editing equipment. Department is active in ACDA, CODA, CORD, IABD, IADMS, NDEO and NYSDEA.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in dance or related field from a college or university accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized institution
  • Previous experience as a department chair or equivalent management experience
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching dance theory and/or practice at the college level
  • Ability to work collaboratively with department directors, faculty, and staff
  • Demonstrated history of scholarly or creative activities at the national/international level.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse undergraduate and graduate student population.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in developing assessment procedures and curriculum
  • Demonstrated history of peer-reviewed research (scholarly or creative) at the national/international level.
  • Experience with NASD accreditation
