Associate Vice President of Faculty Affairs and Development
California State University, Dominguez Hills

California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) invites applications and nominations for the Associate Vice President of Faculty Affairs and Development (Job ID 3382).

Position Information
This is a full-time management (MPP) position. MPP employees serve at the pleasure of the campus President. MPPs do not serve a probationary period and never receive permanent status.

This position is a "designated position" in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.

Review of applications will begin Thursday, November 1, 2018, and the position will remain open until filled.

Salary is commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities
40% Addresses all faculty collective bargaining issues, including:

  • Grievance processing;
  • Interpretation, implementation, and compliance of CFA (faculty) collective bargaining agreement;
  • Responses to CFA information and other requests

Counsels and advises President, Provost, Deans and other administrators on various faculty personnel issues, including:

  • Interpreting and implementing campus policies and procedures;
  • Achieving faculty diversity;
  • Taking appropriate disciplinary and other corrective actions with faculty.

Serves as liaison to the Chancellor's Office Employee Relations for faculty collective bargaining issues and the Office of General Counsel for faculty legal issues.

30% Administers, coordinates, and secures the integrity of the following faculty personnel processes:

  • Retention, Tenure, and Promotion (RTP);
  • Perceived Teaching Effectiveness (PTE);
  • Faculty recruitment, selection and appointment processes, including adherence of faculty search committees to established guidelines;
  • Ongoing faculty professional development, through the Faculty Development Center;
  • Faculty salary processes, e.g., Service Salary Increases (SSls) and market/equity salary adjustments;
  • Leaves of absences, including sabbatical leaves, difference-in-pay leaves, and professional and personal leaves without pay;
  • Faculty Early Retirement Program (FERP) applications;
  • Faculty immigration/work status issues;
  • Investigations of allegations which may lead to appropriate disciplinary or other corrective actions with faculty;
  • College post-tenure review process.

Manages Faculty Affairs and Development staff involved in coordinating academic personnel services.

15% Provides advisory and staff support to the following:

  • Academic Senate including its Executive Committee and Faculty Personnel Committee;
  • Faculty Leaves and Honors Committee;
  • Student Grade Appeals Board;
  • University RTP Committee;
  • President, and Provost for RTP process;
  • President for emeritus faculty status designations.

10% Coordinates the annual review and submission of the campus academic calendar to the Chancellor's Office.

  • Oversees and coordinates University Catalog changes for all faculty and emeritus faculty listings;
  • Oversees faculty separations, resignations, retirements and terminations;
  • Ensures overall integrity of the Faculty Affairs and Development web site.

5% Performs other duties as assigned or directed by the President and Provost.

Department: Office of Faculty Affairs and Development

The Office of Faculty Affairs and Development is responsible for providing a wide range of University support services primarily related to faculty, including faculty relations; provides administrative support for faculty recruitments and appointments, Reappointment, Tenure, and Promotion (RTP) reviews and other evaluation processes, sabbaticals and other leaves, labor contract and policy administration and implementation, salary schedules, faculty awards, student evaluations of teaching, academic calendar, and other academically related processes. The AVP and Faculty Affairs Department works with the Office of Human Resources, Title IX Officers, faculty leadership through Academic Senate, CFA chapter leadership and the CSU System-wide Office of the Chancellor. The Office also coordinates with and monitors the colleges and other units within Academic Affairs with regard to faculty personnel policies, practices, and procedures.

California State University, Dominguez Hills, was established in 1960 and is one of the 23 campuses that comprise The California State University system. CSU Dominguez Hills is an urban, comprehensive public university that serves a culturally rich, diverse student body of over 12,500 students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Job Requirements

Qualifications
Required Education: Terminal Degree appropriate to the applicant's academic field of expertise or a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.

Required Experience: At least ten (10) years of experience in higher education, with at least four years of successful administrative experience at or above the level of department chair or equivalent. This experience should have included responsibility for program planning, and direction and coordination for policy development and implementation.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience working in senate leadership.
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership fostering diversity, inclusion, and equity in a University context.
  • Experience with the recruitment of underrepresented faculty is highly desired.
  • Successful university teaching experience and a record of research, scholarly and creative activity sufficient to merit appointment as a tenured full professor.
  • Experience in academic personnel administration, policies, and procedures in a collective bargaining environment.
  • Academic or administrative experience sufficient in scope to have provided substantial experience in meeting and successfully solving a variety of personnel or management problems.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of academic personnel services.
  • Thorough knowledge of the personnel management policies, programs, relationships, practices and problems unique to the academic environment and higher education.
  • Knowledge of the CFA (faculty) collective bargaining agreement.
  • Knowledge and experience in the area of faculty development and department chair leadership.

Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Skill in conflict resolution.
  • Skill in consultative decision-making.

Abilities:

  • Ability to make objective analyses of current academic personnel management problems, supplemented by experience in employee relations and collective bargaining.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems and to devise innovative solutions.
  • Ability to perceive the implications and potential consequences of various situations and to assess the potential impact of alternative courses of action.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully recruit and mentor faculty.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with faculty governance.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and supervise office personnel successfully.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural, diverse, complex university environment with staff, faculty and administrators.
  • Demonstrated commitment to practices that foster diversity, inclusion, and equity in a University context.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and to work collaboratively university-wide to support the mission of the university.
