The Assistant Director of Diversity will help advance the mission of the office by providing core management and coordination support for 1) broadening participation in engineering, 2) increasing the recruitment and retention of students from underrepresented groups, 3) promoting an inclusive educational environment that is supportive and welcoming of all students, 4) increasing capacity to engage students at all levels in highly relevant, real world educational and professional development opportunities that encourages their interest and commitment to engineering, and 5) building intercultural competencies and the ability of engineering community members to work effectively in a global marketplace.

Essential Functions:

  • Plan and execute the Diversity Program Office's (DPO) outreach programs including Women in Engineering Career Day, Engineering Students Reaching out, Summer Engineering Institute, Power Up, Holyoke Boys and Girls Club, Girl Scout Days, Amherst Regional High School after school program and 4H Springfield. Develop and deliver programmatic curriculum during outreach events. Develop evaluation plans and fulfill reporting requirements. Develop new programs to support diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Plan and execute events such as diversity panels, diversity celebrations, receptions for accepted students and welcome back events. Make all logistical arrangements including registration site development, communications, agenda development, volunteer recruitment and training, room reservations, supply ordering, travel arrangements, budgeting and catering arrangements. Maintain a calendar of events for DPO.
  • Set up programming to support particular groups of students, including arranging speakers, workshops, or other activities with faculty, industry, and alumni who can serve as role models. Provide leadership support for the College's student organizations. Maintain student organization databases and LinkedIn connections. Manage and expand peer mentoring networks.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate strategies to increase the successful recruitment of students from underrepresented groups, including inter-College, cross-campus and regional collaborations. Work with the College of Engineering's Director of Communications and Marketing on marketing strategies.
  • Promote an inclusive educational environment that is supportive and welcoming of all students. Develop and implement strategies to improve climate. Create and administer surveys, focus groups, and evaluations.
  • Train student office support staff and set goals and objectives. Recruit peer academic support staff.
  • Represent the work of the College's Diversity Programs to various Commonwealth of Massachusetts colleges, universities, agencies, state and national engineering and diversity organizations, policymakers, educators, and industry leaders, and at statewide STEM gatherings. Attend STEM Summit and conferences. Network with colleagues on campus and across the region.

Other Functions:

  • Performs related duties as assigned or required to meet Department, Executive Area/Division, and University goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrates capacity, skill and willingness to engage students and contribute to student success.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Computing, Social Science or related field and 3 years of increasingly responsible experience in education, government, industry or with non-profit
  • Demonstrated project management, and writing skills, including data gathering and analysis, strategic project planning and project implementation
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and follow instructions
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills and demonstrated teaching skills
  • Familiarity with issues of underrepresentation in engineering/STEM fields, research, and interventions which support student success in STEM; working knowledge of public education and university system
  • Technical expertise with some sophistication and experience with computerized information systems and Microsoft Office products and willingness to learn new applications
  • Ability to travel both within and beyond Massachusetts
  • Working knowledge of research and trends in education and diversity, especially in STEM fields; grant proposal writing; knowledge of engineering pathway

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Computing, Social Science or related field
  • Qualitative and quantitative experience evaluating various programs initiated either within the College or University
