Associate Professor of Counseling/Chair, Counseling & Human Services

SUMMARY: The Department of Counseling and Human Services is searching for an experienced counselor educator to lead the department in preparing counselors, educators, and researchers for clinical practice (MA) or for clinical leadership, teaching and research (PhD) to serve an increasingly pluralistic, changing, and global society. The Counseling Department has two CACREP-accredited programs, M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision. The position will be at the Associate Professor rank, tenure track.

According to our 2018 CACREP Vital Statistics report (https://www.stmarytx.edu/academics/department/counseling/), the Department has 63 MA CMHC students (36% minority and 8% non-resident alien) and 53 PhD CES students (68% minority and 22% non-resident alien). In 2018, we graduated 11 MA students and 4 PhD students. In 2018, 100% of MA students passed the National Counselor Exam before graduation, a requirement for the certification as a National Certified Counselor and for counselor licensure in many states.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: To provide excellent teaching and mentoring of students in the Counseling Department; to demonstrate command of one’s subject matter; to articulate the relationship on one’s subject matter to the liberal arts and the Catholic education tradition; to assist students in their professional development; to contribute to the dissemination of knowledge beyond the classroom; to contribute to the scholarship of discovery and integration regularly, and to the scholarship of teaching and application as opportunity arises (see Boyer, 1990, Scholarship Reconsidered); to teach two courses in each Fall and Spring semester; to supervise dissertation students to completion of their program of study; to provide service to the university and community.

Additional focused duties as Department Chair: To evaluate and maintain the quality of instruction within the Department; to plan with Department members innovative curriculum changes and teaching improvements; to propose, in consultation with faculty members, proposed course schedules; to supervise Departmental activities during the summer sessions; to supervise faculty members’ strategy for meeting the University’s requirements for teaching, advising, service and scholarship; to encourage members of the Department to actively participate in learned societies, faculty development programs, and research activities; to propose and administer the annual budget; to assist with marketing of the Department programs; to maintain departmental records; to handle grade appeals and grievance policies;

Job Requirements

CHARACTERISTICS OF A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE: The successful candidate will demonstrate intercultural sensitivity with a strong history of community service and social justice advocacy to underrepresented groups in counseling practice or in higher education. We highly desire a candidate with a history of effective teaching, including experience directing dissertations and/or theses. In addition, we highly desire candidates who possess an area of expertise demonstrated by a record of publications in peer-reviewed academic journal, on average one per year, and presentations at ACA-related conferences. All qualified applicants are welcome, and we actively encourage applicants who reflect the diversity of the student population in our department or other minorities underrepresented in counseling or higher education.

Applicants must have a completed doctoral degree (Ph.D., Ed.D. or Psy.D.) in Counselor Education and Supervision from a CACREP-accredited doctoral program, or the candidate has a related doctoral degree with significant work experience in a CACREP program. The candidate must be licensed as a Professional Counselor in their state and eligible for LPC licensure in the state of Texas.

We strongly prefer a graduate of a CACREP-accredited doctoral program who has significant work and leadership experience in a CACREP-accredited program. Highly desirable is experience writing CACREP accreditation documents or experience with a CACREP site visit. We strongly prefer someone who is an active member of ACA, has served in leadership in national, state, or regional ACA organizations, and has presented in national, regional, or state ACA events. We highly desire the candidate to possess the National Certified Counselor credentials, has a certification in some counseling specialty, and has membership in Chi Sigma Iota, the national Counseling Education honor society. We want a candidate who is aware of social and national trends that influence the counseling profession and has advocated for the counseling profession in their work.
