Osgoode Hall Law School is one of the world’s pre-eminent law schools. Founded in 1889 by the Law Society of Upper Canada, Osgoode became part of York University in 1968. The school’s motto Per Jus Ad Justitiam (“through law to justice”) reflects an outstanding record of promoting innovative thinking and initiatives that link law, equality and social justice. Osgoode’s mission is to lead in the creation of important knowledge about the law, the legal system and society by inspiring thoughtful and influential scholarship and by preparing students for positions of leadership locally and globally.
Osgoode is home to close to 1000 undergraduate students and 500 graduate students, and 60 full-time faculty members. The School offers undergraduate Juris Doctor (JD) degrees and graduate research and professional LLM and PhD degrees. For 20 years, Osgoode Professional Development has provided over 50,000 lawyers and other professionals with CLE courses in an environment unique among North American law schools. The School prides itself on its innovative curriculum and experiential education opportunities. It actively seeks to strengthen funding and other initiatives to promote student access and success. The School is highly committed to academic scholarship and research based on a broad range of practical and theoretical perspectives and methodologies.
Osgoode is one of 11 faculties at York, many of which are recognized nationally and internationally for excellence in research and education. Osgoode takes pride in having the largest law library in Canada. The Dean reports to the Provost and Vice-President, Academic of York University and works in close conjunction with other members of York’s senior administration, including the President, the Vice-Presidents and the Deans of other Faculties. The Dean participates as a member of the University’s Senate and other administrative bodies. The Dean holds ultimate responsibility for the finalization and implementation of academic policy and plans as determined through the School’s governance processes and in consultation with faculty, students, and staff.
