Description/Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Development, the Foundation Senior Staff Accountant performs 
general accounting functions that are complex and broad in nature, specializing in general 
ledger activity and financial reporting.  The Foundation Senior Staff Accountant performs 
various accounting, fiscal, and budgeting functions for the Foundation, including general 
ledger posting and analysis, initiation of monthly and annual closings, cash management, 
monthly balancing of financial records, such as investment portfolio and bank 
reconciliations. 

The Foundation Senior Staff Accountant also analyzes, verifies, and 
prepares ad hoc reports for various meetings and constituencies.  All Financial data entry and 
reporting is performed through Blackbaud Financial Edge and various subsystems including 
Raisers Edge and Account payable modules.

The Foundation Senior Staff Accountant has responsibility for maintaining files of all 
documentation necessary for the Foundation to have a successful annual independent 
financial audit.

Other administrative duties will include scholarship application analysis and reporting, 
student communication and other duties as assigned by the Director of Development, or Vice 
President of Institutional Advancement and Strategic Partnerships.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Responsible for the general accounting and bookkeeping functions 
  • Prepares the monthly closings and general ledger functions 
  • Completes monthly bank reconciliations 
  • Prepares Investment earnings distribution quarterly 
  • Maintains Grant Files and Recommends Grant activity Journal entries 
  • Develop, implement, modify, and document recordkeeping and accounting systems, making use of computer technology 
  • Prepare, examine, or analyze accounting records, financial statements, or other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting and procedural standards 
  • Develop, maintain, and analyze budgets, preparing periodic reports that compare budgeted costs to actual costs for Fundraising Activity, Scholarship Activity, and General Unrestricted Activity 
  • Preparing reports for management on an ad hoc basis 
  • Recommends bank funds transfers from deposits account to checking account with management approval 
  • Prepares internal and external reports, surveys, and ad hoc reports; Establishes regular procedures and performs scheduled analysis of general ledger balance sheets such as investment accounts and scholarship funds 
  • Works closely with the Financial Aid Department to administer disbursement of scholarship awards and award notifications as well as record keeping for scholarship Memorandums of Understanding 
  • Communicate with various College personnel to provide accounting information and support; communicate with outside contacts regarding financial information and other accounting related issues 


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Broad knowledge of general accounting principles and practices.  Application of a working knowledge of the principles, concepts, and theories of accounting and a demonstrated ability to apply accounting practices 
  • Proven ability to analyze complex data, develop financial reports for financial analysis, forecasting, trending, and results analysis.  Strong ability to interpret financial transactions and events for users who must make economic or business decisions 
  • Ensure critical reporting deadlines are met.  Demonstrated ability to practice efficient time management and to prioritize workload, ability to complete multiple activities simultaneously and within deadlines, and to demonstrate flexibility to deal effectively with change 
  • As a learning centered institution, all staff will be expected and evaluated on learning outcomes assessment, effectively adhering to deadlines, maintaining the highest level of professionalism and ethics, and providing exemplary customer service in a civil and collegial environment 
  • Must have proficient computer skills, including MS Office software applications (Word, Excel, with an emphasis on Excel), in addition to automated systems, especially those that relate to financial and inventory management

Required Qualifications

  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university; or a bachelor’s degree from an accredited  college or university with 30 hours of Accounting and related courses, including or supplemented by three hours in auditing as required.  
  • Three (3) years of experience examining, analyzing and interpreting accounting system output, records and reports by applying generally accepted accounting principles. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of staff accountant level experience in non-profit accounting using an inter-related database
