Job Description

Dean of the School of Education
Gonzaga University

Gonzaga University, a Catholic comprehensive liberal arts university sponsored by the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), seeks an innovative, collaborative, and dynamic leader to serve as the Dean of its School of Education (SOE) and advance the School's mission to prepare socially responsive and discerning practitioners to serve their communities and professions.

This is an exceptional opportunity to build on the School's current strengths, expand its engagement with educational and societal movements, and position it to significantly influence policy and practice in the areas and departments served by the SOE: Teacher Education, Special Education, Sport and Physical Education, Counselor Education, School Psychology, and Educational Leadership and Administration.

Reporting to the Provost & Senior Vice President and serving on the Provost's Council, the Dean will lead the School of Education and will be responsible for developing a five- to seven-year plan for the School's continued growth and development. The Dean's responsibilities will include academic programming; assessment of learning, accreditation, and certification; faculty and staff recruitment, development, and review; alumni and community outreach; collaborative strategic planning; budget and personnel management; enrollment management; fund-raising; relationship development with stakeholders; and promoting collaboration within and beyond the University. The Dean will work with the faculty and staff to strengthen current graduate and undergraduate programs and develop new programs to more powerfully realize the Jesuit mission of holistic education in service to the common good. The successful candidate will be one who joins with colleague Deans, the Provost, and other senior administrators to form a cohesive leadership team for the university; supports the mission of Gonzaga University as a Jesuit, Catholic, and humanistic institution; and will commit to embody that mission in the programs as well as in the overall operation of the School.

The ideal candidate will be an entrepreneurial, innovative, collaborative, and persuasive leader who is able to partner successfully with state and national leaders in practice, policy, and research in the disciplines within the SOE while guiding the work of the School's faculty and staff. The Dean will provide strategic leadership to advance excellence in all of the School's programs and to create partnerships and develop interdisciplinary education programs across the University. The Dean will advocate for the School inside and outside the University, while strengthening students' educational experience and developing creative partnerships for the School across the region.

The city of Spokane, whose slogan is "Creative by Nature," is close to 76 lakes, five skiing areas, 20 golf courses, and abundant hiking and rock climbing locales. Multiple music venues, live theater and Broadway plays, the Spokane Symphony, and two professional sports teams add a lively spirit to the mix. The city's population is growing. It now stands at more than 220,000 in the city and 560,000 in the Greater Spokane Metropolitan Area. Significantly, the region is a focal point for developing industries, particularly those related to aerospace, manufacturing, and healthcare. Gonzaga is an integral part of the University District in Spokane, in which research and educational opportunities, in collaboration with other universities, abound.

Job Requirements

An earned doctorate in a discipline appropriate to the School of Education and an academic, scholarly record meriting an appointment with tenure at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the School of Education is required. The successful applicant will possess a record of significant scholarship, superior university teaching, successful administrative leadership, and constructive university, professional, and community service.
