Definition:

The Cilker School of Art & Design at West Valley College is now accepting applications for a full-time, tenure-track instructor in the Department of Theater and Film. The successful candidate will possess the ability to teach scenic design, stagecraft, stage lighting, technical production and general education theater courses. There will also be opportunities to design for college productions each semester.

Building our technical theater program to complement our Live Performance curricula will be the priority as well as working with faculty in Film and Music who are currently developing our first major curricular initiative around Entertainment Design and Technology.

The new faculty member will be welcomed into a program that is part of a vibrant and emerging area of West Valley College. Art and Design is one of the College's top priorities, and within a few short years, will have committed over $100,000,000 to the design and construction of state-of-the-art facilities for performing arts, visual arts and design. Likewise, we seek a committed individual who can who possesses a 21st Century vision for theater and entertainment and the skills to implement that vision with a community of motivated and talented students, faculty, staff and administrators.

The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to work directly with the Dean of the School, fellow faculty, architects and theater specialists in the design of the newly renovated and redesigned theater facilities, which will include state-of-the-art classrooms, studios, 2 stage venues and a new Black Box theater. These new facilities - tentatively scheduled to open in 2022 and envisioned to be an academic and artistic laboratory - will be shared with colleagues and students from Visual Arts, Music, and Dance.

The successful candidate will lead the technical theater program into that future, providing our students with skills and sensibilities that are critical to traditional and emerging theater and entertainment technologies disciplines. Assignment:

This is a full-time, 10-month tenure-track position that begins in Fall 2019. Instructional assignments may include day and/or evening classes, Monday thru Saturday, as needed and rotate among the Theater faculty. This position is represented by the West Valley-Mission Federation of Teachers (WVMFT / AFT Local 6554).

Salary and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range:

  • $64,631 to $100,582 annually; placement is based upon verified academic achievement, teaching and related experience (Academic Salary Schedule, Steps 1-9).

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:

Instructional duties and assignments may consist of one or more of the following:

  • Provide instruction for assigned courses. This includes preparation, in-class activities, evaluation of students’ work, consultation with students outside of class (scheduling time beyond normal office hours if necessary), ensuring regular effective student contact for Distance Education courses, maintenance of currency in the subjects taught and other efforts related to the teaching of the assigned classes, and participate in the process of SLO assessment and evaluation and use the results of these assessments in the process of continuously improving student learning.
  • Maintain accurate class and other records.
  • Submit, when due, all necessary reports, such as attendance, grade reports, rosters, class and office schedules.
  • File a syllabus for each course with the appropriate division offices.
  • Post and maintain office hours each week.
  • Provide each student with a current course syllabus as required by Title 5, which includes SLOs, classroom procedures, requirements and grading policies and provide a copy to the Division Office.
  • Refer students to appropriate college resources.
  • Assist students by providing advice on requirements for successful achievement in the members’ area of expertise.
  • Assume institutional responsibilities, essential to the ongoing operation and effective achievement of department, division, college and district programs.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Education – Possess one of the following:

• Master’s degree or Master of Fine Arts degree in drama/theater arts/performance; OR

• Bachelor’s degree or Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in drama/theater arts/performance AND master’s degree in comparative literature, English, communication studies, speech, literature or humanities; OR

• A valid California Community College Instructor’s Credential in Theatre Arts; OR

• The equivalent of the above.

AND

2. Understanding of, and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
