Assistant or Associate Professor of Education (literacy)

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside invites applications for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor of Education (Literacy).

Responsibilities include teaching courses in the Teacher Education Department and curriculum development at the undergraduate level; supervision of clinical field experiences and directed teaching in the program; working collaboratively with the Institute of Professional Educator Development (IPED) staff, Educator Preparation faculty, Educator Preparation Executive Committee and Advisory Council; and serving as the chair of the Educator Preparation Program (if hired at the associate level). This position requires service to the profession, College, University and local community, including supporting the Educator Learning Community, and mentoring students with a strong focus on the clinical program and the schools and community groups supporting those placements. The successful candidate may be required to teach online and hybrid courses and/or weekend and evening classes.

If hired at the assistant level, this position will teach and supervise 24 credits annually (4/4 standard fall/spring course teaching load) in the Teacher Education Department. If hired at the associate level, in addition to the chairís duties, this position will teach and supervise 18 credits annually (3/3 standard fall/spring course teaching load for the chair) in the Teacher Education Department. Opportunities to teach additional courses in the Summer and Winterim semesters may be available for additional compensation depending upon the needs of the Educator Preparation program. This position is expected to establish and maintain an active research program in the Education field. In addition, the position will be expected to contribute service to UW-Parkside, the College of Social Sciences and Professional Studies (CSSPS), the Institute (IPED), profession, and community.

  • Service to IPED, College of Social Sciences and Professional Studies (CSSPS), UW-Parkside, the profession, and PK-12 community at state and national level

Associate

  • Service to IPED, Educator Preparation Program, College of Social Sciences and Professional Studies (CSSPS), UW-Parkside, the profession, and PK-12 community at state and national level
  • Serve as Educator Preparation Program Chair, responsible for leading, managing and coordinating the work of the Educator Preparation Program, as defined by university policy
  • Identify faculty assignments, recommend faculty appointments and reappointments, support tenure-line faculty in the promotion and tenure process, support professional development of all faculty, mentor and conduct annual performance reviews of faculty
  • Maintain budget preparation and administration
  • Assess the effectiveness of program instruction and advising
  • Foster a culture in the EPP that actively uses data for ongoing program improvement geared at student success and program impact
  • Engage with the Dean and other chairs to create a transparent, data-based culture across the college
  • As a tenured member of the EPP faculty, the Chair is expected to model scholarly engagement through published scholarship and leadership in mainline professional associations
  • Represent the program in the larger education community at the state and national level.
  • Serve as the programís edTPA Coordinator at the state level

Associate:

Qualifications

Required

Assistant:

  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction or related field in education with emphasis in secondary literacy. Should have earned Ph.D. or Ed.D. by the time of appointment.
  • Experience engaging in leadership at the program and department level as well as collaboratively with university colleagues, PK-12 faculty and local, state and national community partners
  • Experience supervising teacher candidates in clinical placements
  • Commitment to, and experience in, the preparation of educators for diverse contexts and populations
  • Knowledge of secondary literacy curriculum and subject specific pedagogy and the integration of technology into teaching and learning
  • A minimum of three years of successful teaching in K-12 settings

Associate:

  • Earned Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction or related field in education with emphasis in secondary literacy
  • At least two years of relevant, successful administrative/leadership experience as department chair
  • Record of peer reviewed publications and teaching experience qualifying the applicant for the rank of tenured associate professor
  • Active record of scholarship and currency in a subfield of education, preferably secondary literacy, and the ability to balance excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service with strong collegial, communicative, and collaborative leadership skills
  • Understanding of best practices and current research in teaching and learning including assessment of teacher candidates
  • Experience with and knowledge of state and/or national program accreditation process(es)
  • Evidence of a high-level of knowledge of the edTPA
  • Commitment to, and experience in, the preparation of educators for diverse contexts and populations
  • A minimum of three years of successful teaching in K-12 settings

Preferred

Assistant:

  • Understanding of best practices and of knowledge current research in teaching and learning including assessment of educator candidates
  • Ability to design, develop, and assess licensure programs
  • Commitment to inquiry, self-evaluation, reflection, and development
  • Experience with LiveText, Via by Watermark, or any other internet-based program assessment tool
  • Experience with and knowledge of state and/or national program accreditation process(es)
  • Familiarity or experience working with the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE)
