The Department of Communication in the Nicholson School of Communication and Media (NSCM) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) is seeking a highly motivated and exceptionally qualified intercollegiate debate coach to lead UCF Debate in national-level intercollegiate debate success. NSCM invites applications for a 9-month, non-tenure earning instructor, lecturer, or tenure-earning assistant professor in the Department of Communication and the John F. (Jeff) Butler Director of Debate anticipated to begin fall 2019.

Job Requirements

Requirements: A minimum of a master's degree (completed by the start of employment) in Communication or related field from an accredited university is required. Additionally, appropriate training, experience and demonstrated potential to succeed and sustain nationally competitive intercollegiate debate program is required. The successful candidate must have evidence of effective teaching experience, and potential for teaching success is required. If hired as a tenure-earning, assistant professor, the successful candidate will hold a doctorate in Communication (or related field) and demonstrate an active program of social scientific scholarship appropriate for a research university and possess the capacity to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Preference: A doctorate in Communication or related field from an accredited institution, with degree conferred by hire date, is preferred.

Debate Program: Direction and related duties include recruitment and coaching of national-level caliber intercollegiate debate competitors (NDT/CEDA), recruitment and mentoring/supervision of graduate assistant debate coaches, coordinating travel arrangements and travel (including coaching and judging duties) with debaters to tournaments, as appropriate.

Responsibilities for debate program administrative functions includes budgeting, seasonal tournament planning, record-keeping, student government association (SGA) relations, establishing and enforcing debate team policies, managing assigned space and/or equipment, ensuring compliance with relevant university policies and regulations, and coordinating the hosting of high school and intercollegiate debate tournaments on the UCF campus.

Instructional Duties: Course assignments will be commensurate with the appointment, with release time given for duties associated with debate and if tenure-earning, an appropriate annual assignment will be dedicated to research. The selected candidate will be assigned to UCF's Orlando Downtown campus. The instructional assignment includes a variety of delivery modes including large lecture, mixed mode, online, and honor's courses in Communication, Speech, Argumentation, and Debate, and/or other courses in ones' areas of specialization.

Research Expectation: If appointed as a tenure-earning assistant professor, there will be a research expectation for this position.

Internal Service: Debate program administration and coaching constitute significant service to the Department, NSCM and UCF. Additional internal service expectations include appropriate engagement in faculty governance, diversity, inclusion and equity enhancement efforts, and other customary service activities consistent with the Department of Communication faculty (e.g., student advising (academic and career), internship supervision, attending faculty meetings and graduation, assessment of student learning, as well as serving on various committees as appropriate.

External Service: The chosen candidate is expected to be active in forensics organizations, (e.g., AFA, NDT, CEDA, etc.), active in debate community service work (e.g., UDL, public debate events, local or national workshops, etc.) and/or active within disciplinary associations (e.g., NCA, regional and state associations, etc.).

NSCM is especially interested in hiring faculty members who can contribute to its climate of diversity and inclusion.
