Dean - College of Education
Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, a comprehensive, high-achieving, and nationally recognized university, currently delivers a personal and challenging academic experience to nearly 9,000 students (8,253 undergraduate and 671 graduate) in 57 undergraduate degree programs and 20 graduate programs, including doctorates in audiology and nursing practice. The university seeks a new Dean of the College of Education (COE) to carry out Bloomsburg University's mission of preparing students for personal and professional success in an increasingly complex global environment.
The new Dean will provide leadership for approximately 35 full-time and 29 part-time faculty to students in six undergraduate programs granting B.S., B.S.Ed., and dual degrees, and six graduate programs granting M.S., M.Ed., and dual degrees. This college is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and is approaching its next accreditation visit in 2020. Many of the college's nationally-acclaimed programs lead to teacher certification approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The college's Special Education program was recently rated 23rd in the U.S. as one of the 25 Best Bachelor's Degrees in Special Education for 2017 by Best Education Degrees, the leading guide to educational careers and colleges. The college's American Sign Language (ASL)/English Interpreting program recently received its specialized accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education (CCIE). Faculty for these programs are experienced PK-12 teachers, supervisors, principals, superintendents, curriculum directors, interpreters, guidance counselors, and student affairs professionals. In addition, students gaining teacher and interpretation certification are provided specialized training in non-academic barriers through the McDowell Institute for Teacher Excellence and are required to obtain field experience beginning in the first year, culminating with 16-week supervised student teaching internships. Recognizing the growing need for college graduates from the fields of science, health sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics, the University's STEM Education Center was established to address this need through a wide range of programming. Thus, the dean will be integral to the continued success of these programs and the potential to develop additional programs in support of the college, the university, the region, and the state.
Under the leadership of a soon-to-be-appointed Provost, the Dean will serve on the Provost's Academic Affairs Leadership Council, and the President's Leadership Council and will participate in the university's upcoming Strategic Planning process to be led by Bloomsburg's President, Dr. Bashar Hanna. The COE dean will be an integral figure for assuring the College of Education remains a cornerstone of the university's academic excellence and remains true to its mission: Understanding strength lies in diversity, the College of Education places the well-being of learners first—fostering ethical and qualified professionals through education, scholarship, and service.
The Dean's responsibilities include academic programming; assessment of learning, accreditation, and certification; faculty and staff recruitment, development, and review; alumni and community outreach; collaborative strategic planning; budget and personnel management; enrollment management; fundraising; relationship development with stakeholders; and promoting collaboration within and beyond the University. The new Dean will work with the faculty and staff to strengthen current undergraduate and graduate programs and develop new programs to realize the mission of public education in service to students and the region.
The ideal candidate will be an innovative, collaborative, and persuasive leader who is able to partner successfully with state and national leaders in practice, policy, and research in the disciplines within the COE while guiding the work of the College's faculty and staff. The Dean will provide strategic leadership to advance excellence in all of the College's programs and to create partnerships and develop interdisciplinary education programs across the University.
An earned doctorate in a discipline appropriate to the College of Education and an academic, scholarly record meriting an appointment with tenure at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the College of Education is required. Experience in K-12 classroom teaching and general education leadership is essential. The successful applicant will possess a record of significant scholarship, superior university teaching, successful administrative leadership, and constructive university, professional, and community service. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations is required.
