Associate Professor - Critical Studies of Race or Indigeneity in Physical Activity and/or Sport

The Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education (KPE) at the University of Toronto invites applications for a tenure stream appointment in the critical studies of race or Indigeneity in physical activity and/or sport. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor and will begin on July 1, 2019, or shortly thereafter.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in physical cultural studies or a closely related discipline with a focus on critical race or Indigenous studies, with a demonstrated exceptional record of excellence in research and teaching.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and graduate program teaching on the topic of ‘race, sport, physical activity’ broadly defined, and to increase opportunities for graduate students to conduct research that focuses on race, racism and Indigeneity, and/or includes a post-colonial, anti-racist or Indigenous approach to research.
Applicants must have established and sustained over several years a record of research excellence at the highest level internationally, and will be expected to maintain and lead an outstanding, innovative, competitive, independent and externally funded research program at that level.
Excellence in research will be demonstrated by a record of sustained and impactful contributions and publications in top ranked relevant journals, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, distinguished awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements by referees of top international stature.
Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, strong letters of reference and the teaching portfolio submitted as part of the application (to include a teaching statement, sample course syllabi, and teaching evaluations).
A commitment to excellent student mentorship in the undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as contributions to service through engagement on Faculty-related committees will be expected.
Other forms of recognition that will be considered include letters of support from organizations who are active in race or Indigenous activities and/or associated community members.
We seek exceptional candidates who would complement our existing strengths (for KPE Faculty Members/Research Areas, please see https://kpe.utoronto.ca/faculty) and expand upon existing collaborations with colleagues in the Faculty, university and related research community. Applicants will be assessed on the basis of these criteria, as they relate to each candidate’s area of inquiry.
The selection process will be based on scholarship, interviews, research seminar, and meetings with faculty and students.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
