The Weapons, Robotics, and Control Engineering Department at the United States Naval Academy invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin the Fall semester of 2019. Candidates with a background in embedded systems, sensor networks, and/or cyber physical systems are particularly encouraged to apply although all qualified candidates will be considered.
USNA’s Brigade of Midshipmen is an undergraduate body of approximately 4400 that is among the most geographically diverse in the United States, with representation from all 50 states and 29 countries. We seek candidates who are interested in contributing to our diverse academic community, and who support a strong commitment to undergraduate education. The WRC department is a 50-50 mix of civilian and military academicians whose focus is on quality instruction. Faculty in the WRC department represent a broad range of academic disciplines and work closely with counterparts in other engineering and math/science departments for both research and undergraduate education. World-class pedagogy is enabled through small class sizes (typically fewer than 20 students) and generously-equipped engineering labs and design spaces. A permanent technical staff works closely with the faculty to support project based learning.
All tenure track faculty are expected to produce peer reviewed research and contribute to their academic communities. USNA and the WRC Department are uniquely positioned to support interdisciplinary research in cyber physical and embedded systems. The department will be moving into Hopper Hall, a new academic building on the USNA campus (the Yard) with a planned opening in the Fall of 2020. Hopper Hall will be the Navy’s academic center for cyber research and education. The extensive lab facilities include a 100,000 gallon Surface and Underwater Robotics Facility (SURF) test pool with aerial and aquatic motion capture systems for sea, air, and land systems, a high bay with GPS telemetry for development of full-scale autonomous vehicles and devices, and a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) for classified research.
This is a 10-month, tenure-track federal excepted service position. The initial contract period is for three years. Salary for this position will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
