Otis College of Art and Design is accepting applications for a full-time faculty appointment in its Foundation department. The successful candidate will teach in our Foundation 3-D Design Program with opportunities for other Foundation teaching assignments depending on the applicant’s experience. The 3-D Design program instructs art and design students in hand skills and form building, history and theory from platonic solids to 3-D modeling. Initial placement in rank is recommended by the department Chair and requires review and approval of the Chair of the Rank & Promotion Committee and the Provost. The College does not grant faculty tenure; this is a renewable full‐time faculty appointment subject to annual renewal based on a performance review. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2019. The 3-D Design position reports to the Area Head for 3-D Design and the Chair of Foundation. The application deadline is Friday March 29, 2019.
Classes: Foundation Program, Building Form and Form and Space
Building Form: Students study form in both two-dimensional rendering and three-dimensional building through drawing and building objects. Skills of relational measurement, compositional organization, and the placement of form in space inform both drawing and form-building activities. Students work in both analogue and digital formats.
Form and Space:
Students employ acquired skills transferred from Drawing and Building Form to explore and exploit materials as well as to discover unique processes in creating novel form. The study of three-dimensional design expands to encompass meaning construction, composition and research as students engage the more complex issues of form and space. Prerequisite: FNDT 160 Drawing and Building Form. Recommended for students planning to select A/L/I, Fashion Design, or Product Design as their major. Some sections of this course produce work in both analogue and digital formats.
3-D Foundation Faculty Responsibilities:
•Full‐time contact hour load, minimum of 18 contact hours per week (15 hours per week if teaching only 3 hour classes)
•Provide a minimum of 6 hours on average per week service to the Foundation Department as assigned by the Chair of Foundation
•Timely response to administrative responsibilities related to teaching and assessment
•Enhance the visibility of the department through on‐ and off‐campus events.
•MFA degree in art/design required.
•Minimum three years college-level art and design teaching experience.
•Demonstrated ability to teach first‐year art and design fundamentals with an expertise and substantial knowledge of historical and contemporary artists and designers and methodologies.
•Demonstrated ability to teach design in both analog and digital formats.
•Professional standing as a practicing/exhibiting artist and/or designer.
•Engaged in researching and developing new pedagogical approaches.
•A keen interest in Foundation Education.
•Must be able to work creatively and effectively with a diverse student body and our team of professional artists/designers/educators.
•At least 5 years college‐level teaching experience in Foundation and upper division design courses in an accredited college.
•Demonstrated ability to develop a successful course of study in 3-D Design with expertise in digital programs related to 3-D form building.
•Preference will be given to applicants able to teach in other areas of the Foundation program, i.e. 2-D Design, Drawing or Creative Practice.
•Willingness to learn and teach html coding and/or other web based languages.
