The Academic Systems Specialist provides technical maintenance and recovery support services for the College’s academic programs, students, faculty and staff. This position customizes, maintains, and/or reconfigures academic IT-related systems to ensure the highest levels of efficiency and security. This position provides assistance related to installations, replacements, upgrades of servers, and operating systems as appropriate. This position works closely and coordinates with administrative technical support staff in all shared service and support functions. This position reports directly to the Senior Director of End-User Computing.
•Supports departmental computer rooms, multimedia classrooms, portable IT-related devices, and other academic computing hardware and software. Identifies, diagnoses, tests, and resolves computer network and server performance problems.
•Installs, configures, tests, and assists users with the implementation of new hardware, software, and applications. May develop custom scripts for end-users.
•Configures and tests academic computer hardware, network software, and operating system software for deployment. Monitors academic operating systems and application environments for performance and security. Maintains and administers academic computer networks and related computing environments, including academic computer hardware, systems software, applications software, and all configurations.
•Assigns, modifies, and deletes academic user accounts/profiles and resolves IT-access problems. Helps maintain integrity of IT-related security systems.
•Provides training and guidance to other technical support staff and student workers. Plans and designs training documentation and conducts hands-on training. Helps develop work schedules, assignment priorities, and system response protocols. Participates in the interviewing and hiring process.
•Leads computer lab orientations and workshops for students and faculty.
•Develops instructional materials for students and faculty to reinforce classroom instruction.
•Participates in system recovery, system health checks, and file retrieval for servers and users. Performs system backups and monitors off-site storage. Repairs and/or recovers systems. Follows up on problems, supports information security procedures, and escalates as necessary for system recovery.
•Develops documentation for systems and administration procedures. May write reports and/or summaries (i.e., status reports, problem reports, progress summaries, system utilization reports) as needed. Develops, implements, and documents procedures for all supported hardware and software systems.
•Recommends changes to improve systems and network configurations, and determines hardware or software requirements related to such changes. May help develop a budget plan in collaboration with supervisor based on acquisition and maintenance recommendations.
•Stays informed of new developments and technologies by reading journals and other pertinent publications, maintaining contact with vendors, and participating in professional organizations, meetings, and seminars.
•Performs other related duties as assigned.
•Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer information systems, or related field is required or combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education.
•A minimum of 2 to 4 years of experience with systems administration is required, preferably in a higher education environment.
•Experience in OS systems scripting is required.
•Must be able to work efficiently and cooperatively in a multitasking collaborative team environment.
•Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills.
•Must be willing to be available on-call and perform duties outside of core business hours.
•Working knowledge of current Microsoft Windows and MacOS is required. Linux and VMware knowledge are preferred.
•Experience with backups, storage, SANs (preferably with 3Par,) RADIUS, LDAP, email and computer security is preferred.
•Experience with other operating systems such as Windows, Mac OS, and a broad range of hardware platforms is desired.
•Experience with applications and tools including Banner, Oracle, MS SQL, MySQL, web-based productivity applications, and open source solutions are highly desirable.
•Experience with computer and network security including Cisco network devices, firewalls, vulnerability scanning, intrusion detection/prevention, vulnerability remediation, and log monitoring is a major plus.
