The Division of Life Sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles is seeking applicants for a full-time Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment (LPSOE) in one of the Life Science Departments: Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Integrative Biology & Physiology, Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics, Molecular, Cell & Developmental Biology, or Psychology. This position has a similar career progression to someone who enters as a tenure-track assistant professor. Faculty appointed as LPSOE are Academic Senate members whose expertise and responsibilities center on undergraduate education and scholarly analysis and improvement of teaching methods.

A successful candidate will be expected to provide leadership in innovative and inclusive teaching in the Life Science Quantitative Biology Curriculum. Their primary teaching responsibility will include our new introductory mathematics series for first-year life science majors, Mathematics for Life Scientists, based on the text Modeling Life (https://www.springer.com/us/book/9783319597300). These courses teach calculus and linear algebra with a focus on developing and analyzing models of nonlinear dynamical systems in ecology, biology, physiology, epidemiology and other subjects in the Life Sciences. The LPSOE will work with other faculty and the campus Center for Education Innovation and Learning in the Sciences to develop, implement, assess, and publish findings for new pedagogical initiatives. The appointee will also be expected to demonstrate continued professional growth that enhances their value to the University. Contributions and achievements supporting professional growth include: (i) acquisition of intramural and/or extramural funds to support educational initiatives, (ii) curriculum innovation to promote the retention of diverse students in Life Sciences, (iii) academic leadership within the University beyond normal service obligations, and (iv) involvement in professional organizations.

Individuals with a history of mentoring students under-represented in the sciences are encouraged to apply and to describe their experience in a cover letter. Review of applications will begin on April 30, 2019 and continue until the position is filled.

Job Requirements

Qualified applicants must have a Ph.D. in a Mathematical discipline (e.g., Mathematics, Biomathematics) or a Ph.D. in a Life Science discipline, with background in mathematical modeling. Candidates must have experience in teaching undergraduates and the ability to teach calculus and linear algebra in UCLA’s Quantitative Biology Curriculum. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience and based on University of California pay scales.
