The University of Pittsburgh has a long history of research accomplishments and excellence in neuroscience. The Department of Neurobiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine has substantial programmatic strengths in neural development, circuit and systems function, cellular communication through receptors, channels and synapses, systems/integrative neuroscience and neurological and psychiatric disease.

The faculty in the Department integrate their efforts with other research programs at the University of Pittsburgh and nearby Carnegie-Mellon University.

Members of the faculty also actively participate in the Center for Neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh (CNUP) and the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition (CNBC), a joint program of the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, as well as the Pittsburgh Center for Pain Research and the Pittsburgh Institute for Neurodegenerative Disease.

Research programs in the Department focus on addressing questions central to understanding the biological basis of brain function and the genetic and epigenetic influences that result in neurological and psychiatric disease.
