The UAB Department of Medicine currently ranks 16th among Departments of Medicine in NIH funding, with the Division of Preventive Medicine accounting for a large proportion of federally sponsored research funding within the Department. In addition to its strong research programs, among the Departmentís other strengths are the national standing of several of its clinical divisions in the US News and World Report rankings, and an Internal Medicine Residency Program that ranks 5th nationally.

The Division of Preventive Medicine is internationally recognized through its centers of excellence and its contributions to many groundbreaking trials, observational studies, and methodology in quality measurement. Currently, the division has 90 active grants and contracts totaling more than $136 million in extramural funding from the NIH, CDC, AHRQ and the Veterans Health Administration. Research programs are primarily in the areas of: clinical outcomes and effectiveness research, with a particular focus on quality of care and implementation research; health disparities research; prevention and control trials; and epidemiologic studies in chronic diseases with a focus on underserved populations and women. This Division is the home of several coordinating centers including CARDIA. The Division provides a vibrant interdisciplinary environment that stimulates professional growth and provides access to an outstanding infrastructure which includes a multi-studies coordinating center, the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Facility shared with the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, and two intramurally-supported University-wide Interdisciplinary Research Centers.

The two University-wide Interdisciplinary Research Centers housed within the Division are the Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and Education and the Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities Research, which is also a national Center for Excellence with NIH core funding. These centers provide additional infrastructure for research and training in outcomes and disparities research. In addition to these centers, the health services research and training environment at UAB includes: an AHRQ-funded Center for Education and Research on Therapeutics (CERTs); an AHRQ-funded National Research Services Award T32 in Health Services Research; a VA HSR&D Research Enhancement Award Program (REAP); the federally endowed Lister Hill Center for Health Policy; the Departments of Health Care Organization and Policy, Epidemiology, and Biostatistics within the School of Public Health; the Department of Health Services Administration within the School of Health Professions; and an NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA), which includes health disparities and outcomes research as cross-cutting themes. The Division also has strong ties with the Division of General Internal Medicine and interacts with other University-wide Interdisciplinary Centers such as the Center for Aging, Comprehensive Cancer Center, Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Center, and Diabetes Research and Training Center. These centers all have NIH core funding. Many of the Divisionís health services research faculty also have joint research and clinical appointments at the Birmingham VA Medical Center.

DOPM currently has 26 full-time faculty members involved in research programs primarily related to clinical health services research, clinical trials, and epidemiology with particular focus on underserved populations and women. The UAB CCC has approximately $100 million in extramural research funding, 9 major research programs, 15 shared facilities, and 3 SPORES. UAB is a flourishing urban university and medical center with research funding exceeding $433 million.
