Job Description

Assistant Professor - Computational and Metabolic Biology
University of California, Berkeley

The Department of Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology and the Center for Computational Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seek applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor nine-month faculty position, in the area of Computational and Metabolic Biology, with an expected start date of July 01, 2019.

We seek an individual who has developed a vigorous research program applying computational methods to metabolic biology, or a program that is capable of being applied to research at the interface between computation and metabolic biology. Metabolic biology, broadly defined, includes but is not limited to metabolic regulation, physiological chemistry, integration of complex networks, control of metabolic fluxes, nutrient functions and disorders of metabolic control. Computational biology binds together multiple areas of biological research with the mathematical and computational sciences, including data-oriented biology, scientific discoveries based on high-throughput methods, metabogenomics and other investigations at the confluence of biology, computation, and mathematics/statistics.

This will be a joint appointment in both the Department of Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology and the Center for Computational Biology. The appointee will benefit from access to Ph.D. students in multiple departmental and interdepartmental programs and will contribute to educating undergraduates. Numerous opportunities exist for interactions and collaborations with colleagues at UC Berkeley and in the Bay Area.

The Department of Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology, the Center for Computational Biology, and the Berkeley campus value diversity, equity and inclusion as exemplified by the following principles of community: we recognize the intrinsic relationship between diversity and excellence in all our endeavors; we embrace open and equitable access to opportunities for learning and development as our obligation and goal. Our excellence can only be fully realized by faculty, students, and staff who share our commitment to these values. Successful candidates for our faculty positions will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to equity and inclusion through their research, teaching, and/or service. Financial and in-kind resources are available to pursue activities that help accelerate our efforts to achieve our equity and inclusion goals.

The University of California, Berkeley is dedicated to recruiting a diverse applicant pool and is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. Preferred candidates should demonstrate the highest standards of professional research, teaching, service, and contribute to our commitment to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education.

Job Requirements

Basic Qualifications (required at the time of application):
Applicants must have a Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) or M.D. (or equivalent international degree) at the time of application.

Preferred Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have:

  • A documented record of high quality work in experimental biology and/or computational biology, as well as willingness to participate in teaching and service at the University.
  • Proven excellence in research in computational biology and/or metabolic biology, as demonstrated by a record of significant, impactful and innovative publications.
  • Evidence of research and expertise at the interface between computation and metabolic biology
  • An interest in establishing a research program at the confluence of biology, computation and mathematics/statistics
  • Demonstrated evidence of having developed an independent research program
  • Current research plans that have the potential to result in a program of high merit and impact as an Assistant Professor.
  • Evidence of ability to contribute effectively to undergraduate and graduate teaching in a setting such as UC Berkeley.
  • Demonstrated ability to be a conscientious community member, with evidence of willingness to contribute to service in the Department, the Center and on campus.
