Montana State University, Native American Studies Department

General Statement

The Department of Native American Studies at Montana State University seeks an experienced educator and scholar who wishes to join an active and growing department. This is a tenure track position at the Associate or Full Professor level to begin in August 2019. The successful candidate will be a researcher and teacher who will help the Native American Studies Department continue to provide outstanding scholarship, teaching and service. We seek individuals who work professionally and effectively with diverse individuals, possess effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and have the ability to contribute positively to the academic success of the students and the mission of Montana State University.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties include advising and mentoring Native American Studies graduate students, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in the candidate’s areas of expertise, and maintaining a strong program of research and publication.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

1. PhD in Native American Studies or closely related field, or equivalent terminal degree.

2. Experience in a tenure-track position or equivalent research and teaching experience.

3. Established research program with a successful record of publishing high-quality and original research in appropriate disciplinary refereed journals.

4. Demonstrated experience in teaching, advising and mentoring both undergraduate and graduate students.

5. Evidence of meaningful university and professional service, leadership, and/or outreach.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

1. Generalist with specific research and teaching interests in one or more of the many areas relevant to Native American Studies, including but not limited to: linguistics and language revitalization; Native art history, appreciation, and/or creation; Native spirituality and/or philosophies; Native gender studies; Native media production; contemporary issues; higher education and/or tribal colleges; Native economics and economic development; Indigenous science.

2. Familiarity with issues affecting Native peoples of the Western hemisphere especially, and ability to put these in comparative contexts.

3. Familiarity with and willingness to explore uses of technology in teaching, including online instruction and growing collaboration with tribal colleges in Montana and beyond.

4. Evidence of progressive administrative experience.
