Job Description

Otis College of Art and Design is accepting applications for a full-time faculty appointment in its Fine Arts department. The successful candidate will be qualified to teach beginning, intermediate and advanced courses in the Sculpture and New Genres (SCNG) emphasis area including introductory to advanced courses in video/film. The successful candidate will also teach as part of the team in our interdisciplinary studio courses, working with intermediate and advanced students in all media. In addition, they will develop electives in their chosen métier (including sculpture, film/video, performance, sound, public practice, theory and criticism). Initial placement in rank is recommended by the department Chair and requires review and approval of the Chair of the Rank & Promotion Committee and the Provost. The College does not grant faculty tenure; this is a renewable full‐time faculty appointment subject to annual renewal based on a performance review. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2019. The faculty in this position reports to the Chair of Fine Arts.

Essential Duties:

•Teaches a full-time studio contact hour load (18 contact hours per week each semester)

•Provides a minimum of 6 hours on average per week in service to the department and the College as assigned by the Chair (i.e., serving on college-wide committees, attending faculty meetings, working department lab hours, participating in shared-governance.)

•Meets the goals and objectives of course curriculum, defined learning outcomes, and assessment protocols.

•Mentors students in assigned classes, including student advisement, in either the junior level or senior level interdisciplinary studio.

•Teaches across a variety of media in the junior or senior level interdisciplinary studio.

•Participates in the development of program curriculum.

•Sets and models standards for maintaining a professional practice/studio.

•Presents art to students in context, outside of the classroom, in museums and galleries both locally and, potentially, in travel study courses.

•Provides guidance and direction to teaching assistants and part-time faculty members. Schedules, assigns, and prioritizes workloads as well as sets appropriate deadlines; monitors classroom studios.

•Participates in administrative duties such as writing course syllabi, developing curricular materials, monitoring student attendance, documenting student learning, and submitting grades in a timely manner.

•Participates in annual program reviews and assessment.

•Enhances the visibility and promotion of the department through attending on-and-off-campus events.

•Other duties as assigned by the Chair

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

•MFA degree or combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education.

•Professional standing as a practicing/exhibiting artist with an exhibition history of 3-5 years minimum, preferably with an international reputation.

•Teaching experience in the field of studio art, and developing curriculum at a similarly accredited institution of higher learning, for a minimum of three years.

•Demonstrated teaching effectiveness at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced undergraduate levels.

•Demonstrated ability to teach a broad range of materials in a variety of media including film/video.

•Experience developing electives across disciplines.

•Thorough understanding of the history and practice of modern and contemporary art and criticism.

•Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills.

•Ability to work creatively and effectively with a diverse student body as part of a team of professional artists/educators.

•Knowledge of contemporary art and criticism is essential.

Preferred Qualifications

•An on-going, active studio practice.

•Demonstrated ability to teach outside the classroom or to develop challenging curriculum.

•Experience that indicates the ability and ambition to take a leadership role in the Fine Arts program (including the development of curriculum, and potentially a new emphasis area) is preferred.

•Experience working with students in all media and across disciplines at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels in a college or university environment.

•Ability to teach effectively to a diverse range of learning styles.

•Artists with an interdisciplinary practice and an academic or professional background in more than one discipline are strongly encouraged to apply.
