Clark University’s American Language and Culture Institute seeks to fill the position of Assistant Director. Reporting to the Director of ALCI, a successful candidate will provide English instruction to international students enrolled in Clark University’s intensive, non-credit, English for Academic Success Program and the English for the Community Workshops as well as perform other administrative tasks.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Advise students on a variety of matters including course selection and level progression, academic policies and regulations, resolving complaints, next steps to follow when completing an ALCI program, warnings regarding attendance and failure to achieve programmatic standards, and additional resources available on campus.
  • Oversee the placement test process including revising tests (with piloting, analysis, and implementation), rating completed tests, and communicating with students the levels of placement.
  • Report results of student placement and movement through levels including pass/fail rates and mastery of student learning outcomes to analyze accuracy of student placement and validity of student learning outcomes.
  • Develop and coordinate sessions for English for Academic Success Program and Graduate Pathway students during Week One orientations as well as monthly English language events.
  • Provide assistance to faculty in the implementation of Moodle in achieving student learning outcomes
  • Mentor new faculty, giving assistance with pedagogy and materials
  • Research textbooks, software products, websites, and language lab learning activities for the program. Serve as a liaison with textbook publishers' representatives to obtain material
  • Ensure faculty have necessary materials prior to the start of a semester.
  • Assist with conducting faculty observations and providing instructors with feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Assist with hiring, supervising, mentoring and evaluating instructors, tutors and program staff; including arranging for substitute teachers when necessary.
  • Teach up to 9 hours of class per week as agreed upon and as needed.
  • Evaluate student performances according to the guidelines of the ALCI curriculum and use Moodle, Clark University’s online learning platform, to analyze student progress towards achieving student learning outcomes and to record grades.
  • Share resources and work collaboratively with other instructors and office personnel.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • (Minimum) Master's degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or related field
  • Three years ELL teaching experience at post-secondary level.
  • Excellent intercultural communication and interpersonal skills; Effective oral and written skills
  • Demonstrated ability to use a variety of active and student-centered teaching methods.
  • Working knowledge of computer assisted language learning platforms such as Moodle, Blackboard, or Sakai for providing timely feedback regarding progress towards achieving outcomes.
