What You Will Do

UC has exciting opportunities for two fixed term academic positions, each for a two year term, in Te Kura Ārahi Ako - School of Educational Studies and Leadership including the development and implementation of a new degree programme for 2020. Come and join our dynamic team and launch this new programme:

  • One EDSL position at the rank of Fixed Term Lecturer / Senior Lecturer will contribute to teaching and research in Educational Studies. Candidates with a background in psychology or e-learning will be highly regarded. This position, subject to the skills of the successful candidate, may also contribute to the teaching the new undergraduate programme the Bachelor of Youth and Community Leadership.
  • One EDSL position at the rank of Fixed Term Senior Lecturer will contribute to teaching and research in Educational Studies and Leadership in the development, implementation, coordination, teaching and research associated with UC's new Bachelor of Youth and Community Leadership. Candidates with a background in critical youth studies, community psychology, and/ or e-learning will be highly regarded.

In 2020 the School will be launching a new Undergraduate Programme (subject to CUAP approval) the Bachelor of Youth and Community Leadership. This programme provides students with flexible pathway options towards becoming leaders in an area of personal interest in the context of community engagement and global citizenship. Students will become aware of youth movements and take leadership in shaping social and political futures, being biculturally competent and culturally responsive in their work with people and communities. The development of resilience, innovation and curiosity within and through the programme will equip students well for entrepreneurialism, employment and academic pathways, addressing local, national and global issues of concern for the young generation. Areas graduates are likely to find employment in include youth work and activism, NGOs, corporate social responsibility, social entrepreneurs, humanitarian work, local and central government, church settings, iwi/hapū, education and training.

Job Requirements

Who You Are

Candidates are required to have a doctoral degree in Education, Leadership, or other relevant discipline and will be expected to have:

  • relevant and effective University teaching experience in their specialist area(s), including Undergraduate and Postgraduate.
  • experience in teaching a combination of the following Educational Studies areas: leadership, e-learning, psychology, critical youth studies, community psychology.
  • experience in thesis supervision, or capacity to supervise research students.
  • able to work independently and collaboratively in their area of research.
  • a research programme that is relevant to the interests of the School.
  • an appropriate research publication history, and plans for future research and publication. consistent with appointment at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer rank.
  • competency and confidence in bicultural practice, or commitment to attain this.

It is desirable that candidates have experience in the educational sector and some understanding of the Aotearoa New Zealand education system is preferred.

The successful applicant will have opportunities for international conference travel to support their research and teaching activities. Any appointee will have the opportunity to network with international leaders in Education, Health Sciences and a range of disciplines through the University's unique Erskine Fellowship and Canterbury Fellowship Scheme (which enables the University to host world leading academics) and through the University's academic staff exchange programmes with Oxford and Cambridge Universities in the UK.
